Why Choose the iPhone X?
When Apple released the iPhone 8, smartphone fans were happy but there was also a bittersweet feeling that came with it because we wondered where they would possibly go next. However, almost immediately, Apple struck again for this, the iPhone X, the device that marks the tenth anniversary of Apple smartphones.
In addition to the all-screen front, the home button has now disappeared and it becomes the first iPhone to use facial recognition which means you don’t need to mess around with a passcode or the unreliable fingerprint access. As with the iPhone 8, you can also enjoy wireless charging.
Screen and Design – For many years, Apple has been stuck at around 80% in terms of screen size and the front of the phone. For the most part, they never pushed past this because of the front-facing camera and home button taking space at the top and bottom respectively. Now, with the iPhone X, we have a 5.8-inch screen and an all-screen front to finally align themselves with the Samsung Galaxy devices which have been offering this for some time.
Compared to said Galaxy devices through, there’s one advantage and this is the fact the screen has been able to grow without pushing the size of the model to its limits. In the hands, it still fits snugly without the need to use both hands just to make a phone call.
Boasting OLED display technology, the screen is crisp and bright with astounding colours. Once you add in the larger screen size, this is the device Apple fans have been waiting for when it comes to games and watching movies.
Wireless Charging – These days, wireless charging seems to be the way forward and Apple has now introduced it to their famous smartphone which removes the need for a cable. So long as you’re willing to invest extra in the AirPower charging mat, up to three different devices can be charged at the same time. Furthermore, you can utilize the strange charging stations you’ve been seeing in train stations, hotels, cafes, and airports too.
Facial Recognition – While Touch ID had promise on the iPhone, it never really took off due to its inconsistency so Apple has addressed this by introducing Face ID. After scanning your features, the device keeps them stored and will unlock as soon as you look at your phone. Not only is Face ID used for unlocking, it has also been integrated with Apple Pay so you can buy things within seconds.
If you’re worried about the security of this system, it’s a fair concern but the facial recognition system only works when the eyes are open. Therefore, nobody can hold your phone up to your sleeping face and gain access. After this, it has plenty of other functions including the ability to reduce the volume on an alarm, bring up notifications, and keep the screen lit even if you haven’t touched the screen for a while (when reading, for example!).
Two Cameras – With most smartphones these days, they offer both a main camera and a selfie camera and iPhone has long followed this trend. This time, the camera has twelve megapixels like the older device but it brings the new telephoto lens as an addition. With two lenses, your photos will have sensational depth after blurring out the background and focusing solely on your subject; something many photographers have been paying thousands for over the last few decades.
If you like to use the camera in portrait mode, the iPhone X is perfect because the artificial intelligence scans the shape of your face to light you as best as possible. For panoramas, the wide-angle effect brings a new sense of purpose while the 10x digital zoom (6x for video) allows for supreme close-ups; remember when we used to talk about these features on expensive cameras?
As far as the main camera goes, it can also record in 4K which has four times the resolution of HD; of course, you’ll need a 4K TV or any other 4K device to watch the videos and make full use of the feature.

Turning our attention to the front camera, otherwise known as the ‘selfie camera’, the portrait mode is the same and it offers the same optical image stabilisation feature too. With the former, you can have yourself as the focal point while blaring the background and this is the first time this has been available with the iPhone.
If you like to work with emojis, the TrueDepth feature analyses your facial movements and uses animated emojis to recreate your expressions; Apple has called these ‘Animojis’. Regardless of whether you’re smiling or frowning, you’ll always have an appropriate emoji to send.
iOS 11 – For many, the operating system is the most important feature of a smartphone and the iPhone X uses iOS 11; perhaps the most important feature of this comes in the shape of on-screen gesture understanding. By tracing a simple pattern on the screen, you’ll return to the home screen and this, in case you were wondering, is the replacement for the home button which has served Apple so well for so long.
Additionally, augmented reality (AR) games such as Pokemon GO have been improved. With the Ikea app, you can utilize the main idea behind AR by placing a sofa onto the screen in front of the camera so you’ll see how it looks with the rest of the room. Rather than heading into a store and taking a risk, this allows you to remove the possibility of having to return a large item.
With Siri, it now understands more of what you say and this prevents you from having to phrase certain questions and requests in a strange way. If you want to reserve a table in a restaurant or send money to a friend, these types of voice commands are also available.
On the whole, we would say that iOS 11 is more intelligent and this is a testament to Apple’s investment. Not only is Siri more helpful, Maps can suggest the quickest route to destinations and, when somebody messages to ask where you are, Siri will suggest a current location which can be shared with one tap.
Battery and Processor
If you like to learn the intricacies of smartphones, the iPhone X uses an A11 bionic processor which is custom-made and the most powerful processor an iPhone has ever seen. At first, you might think power leads to inefficiency but this isn’t the case because battery life has been an improvement with this model. Offering two hours longer than the iPhone 7, this couples with the ‘50% in half an hour’ fast-charge to make a fine piece of equipment.
Compare iPhone X Mobile Contract
To finish, we want to delve into some of the details a little more. For the 64GB iPhone X, you’ll have to pay £999 while the 256GB version comes in at £1,149 which might price you out of the market in terms of a SIM-only deal. If you decide to go with a contract instead, you should expect to pay around £50 per month; you have to remember that the phone itself is more expensive than the iPhone 8 at release so this’ll be reflected in the monthly price.
If you think about it, you’ll probably end up paying £1,000 with a contract in around 20 months (or perhaps even less than this, depending on your contract) so you shouldn’t discount the SIM-only option immediately.
When looking for the best deal, be patient because this is now a significant investment. Whereas our mobile phones would previously be replaceable, they’re long-term investments these days so you need to be sensible and find the right contract for you. To do this, find a comparison tool online and check who offers the best deals.
